Pixel-perfect images
StuffIt's 24-bit Image compression technology perfectly preserves the quality of your image when applied to TIFF, PNG, GIF, JPEG 2000 and lossless JPEG images. The graphic file you expand will be a pixel-for-pixel replica of the original image. On some files, you may find that the size of your expanded item differs from the size of the original by a few bytes. This size difference results from the process of re-encoding the image to its original format during the expansion process. In every case, the image you see after expansion will be identical to the image you see before expansion.
How image compression and expansion works
First, your TIFF, PNG, GIF, JPEG 2000 or lossless JPEG format image is converted to bitmap format. The resulting bitmap is then compressed with StuffIt's patented 24-bit compressor. To expand this compressed file, the bitmap is decompressed and then written out in the same format as the original file. The original image is preserved through each step of the process even though the expanded file size may differ from the original file size by a few bytes. The easiest way to test this is to save a bitmap image from both the original and expanded image. The bitmap from the expanded file will be a byte-for-byte replica of the bitmap from the original file; the pixels will not change.
Data integrity and recompression
Much like JPEG compression, StuffIt 12 can make already compressed files even smaller. Recompression ‘disassembles’ the structure of the data type and then compresses it more efficiently using StuffIt’s compressors. When the item is expanded from the StuffIt X archive, the original data type is reassembled.
A good example is Zip recompression. When StuffIt recompresses a Zip into a SITX archive, the Zip is opened and its content compressed into a SITX archive. Upon expansion of this SITX, the Zip archive is recreated. This recreated Zip archive and the original Zip archive may differ in file size but, when expanded, the output from both Zip archives is identical. While there may be changes in the Zip “container” as a result of StuffIt compression, the contents of the container remain unchanged.

Simply click, drag and drop; StuffIt will take care of the rest!
MagicMenu™ Magic Menu and the StuffIt Contextual menu are integrated into the Finder to make it easy for you to quickly compress, expand, and even mail files without having to launch a StuffIt application. Magic Menu appears in the Finder’s menu bar. Simply select a file in the Finder and choose an action.
To access the StuffIt Contextual Menu, select the file you want to compress, expand or mail, and hold down the Control (Ctrl) key. Multitask in the Finder while working with seamlessly integrated StuffIt tools!
StuffIt Command Line Tools If you're among the group of power users who are more comfortable with a terminal than a menu, StuffIt offers unhindered access to all of StuffIt's features via the command line.
Achives as large as you need Of course the StuffIt X (.sitx) format is still the smallest, safest, most advanced compression format available anywhere. One of its many advantages is that it does not have the 4 GB size limitation that the Zip and Sit formats have. Only SITX archives can safely be made with sizes into the Terabytes.
